Well, I’ve just posed for my portrait at my new job and my first week is over.? My observations:

1. A nine to five literally means that for me. I don’t even think about work when I get home (although technically he is thinking about work because he’s writing about it – Ed) and I’m not preaching on Sunday so in this job I have the complete long weekend off.
2. It feels strange not having any real discretionary time during the day, however the straight-forwardness of “this is your job – do it until the day is over” is refreshing.

3. There is a lot, and I mean a lot, that I do not know about HR and writing Operational procedures and stuff like that.? I am glad God has gifted people to do that – even to like that – because it leaves me cold.

4. There are a lot, and again I mean a lot, of women working in the government and NGO education sectors. If you’re male, single and desperate, get into education – working in the mines is not the place for you.? Then again if you’re male, single and desperate then perhaps you deserve to be working in the mines.

5. You learn a whole lot about the people you work with in the first week – their family issues, lifestyle choices, food choices etc.? People seem pretty open at the start.? I wonder if that decreases exponentially as the weeks progress?

6. I am incredibly nervous for some reason.? I suddenly have a whole list of KPIs to meet and wonder how I might even know if I have not met some of them. Is this normal?

7. There are a number of MBA types in the office including the new Executive Officer (nice bloke) who seem totally at ease with “business-speak” and walk around as if they know how the world operates at that level.? Perhaps it all went wrong when I chose English, English Lit, French, German, Geography (with Maths thrust upon me) at school and deciding to live in a western free-market-economy society.

OK – you? long-term nine-to-fivers – tell me your own experiences.
